We were delighted to be invited to write an article by Mary Nolan, the founding editor of this excellent journal, an independent not for profit publication established in 2013 and soon to move home to the 1001 Critical Days Foundation.
Our three-page article, entitled ‘Preparing school students to be good-enough parents: Nothing more important!’, outlines the work of the charity Before Becoming a Parent. It describes projects such as Seeds of Empathy and Roots of Empathy for young children who observe a mother and baby every few weeks; Teens and Toddlers (now Power2) where teenagers in need of more self-esteem buddy an under-five; and The Baby Borrowers, a BBC scheme in 2007 which entrusted young couples with the care of a baby, then a toddler and so on for three days and nights.
We list the many methods one can use to deliver this education and explain that in our book Nothing More Important, everything we could find from the past and present is related in depth and detail, giving any teacher or youth worker all the materials they need to interest boys, girls and teenagers in this fascinating subject which is both fun and rewarding to teach.
